Using a familiar material, steel, in a different context than where it is most often seen, in order to talk through the temporalities we assign to certain materials. We put our faith in steel to hold up our buildings, bridges, and world but rarely do we acknowledge the material for what it is, remarkable. Born of stellar nucleosynthesis and deposited in the earth’s crust, metal spans across time like few other materials and as such deserves a degree of reverence.&nbsp; Future Remnants is a celebration of metal in a more personal context; as furniture pieces that will likely exist long after their inception. Each form is made of 10 gauge hot rolled mild steel. Each form was cut out of sheet, has at least one element that was bent to a degree and was welded back into a new formation. <img width="5721" height="3814" width_o="5721" height_o="3814" is a simple construction consisting of a circular top surface and three bent and tapered legs welded to the circular surface. It stands 18” tall and stretches 16” diameter. Hard lines on the legs of the structure are contrasted with soft organic lines shining silver on the surface. No. 01 with shadows.No. 01 closeup.Form. No. 02: Refraction – The second form is a more rigid structure consisting of five pieces welding together. It stands 18” tall, 16” wide and 18” long. An exciting thing happens to steel when enough heat is applied, it changes colour dramatically. The colours on the surfaces of this form came from applying heat with an acetylene torch for about two hours until the metal had absorbed enough heat to bring about the colour change. No. 02 different side.No. 02 top surface.Form No. 03: Spotted – The third form is a visual continuation of the first. It takes the structure and semantics of No. 1 and extends them into a new configuration. It is the one that breaks the conventions of the other forms in this series. It is 36” at it’s tallest although the horizontal surface remains at 18” tall but 14” in diameter. The texture on the surface is from surface rust that had corroded through the black coating from the processed steel but it results in a beautiful pattern that can never be precisely replicated. Form No. 03 back surface texture.Form No. 03 side view.Form No. 04: Reef – The fourth and final form is a continuation of the second. The dimensions have increased and the methods have been refined. It is still five pieces welded together, but now it is 21” long, still 18” tall and 16″ wide. The colour treatment on this form follows the same ideas as for Form No. 2 but with a more even heating. The colour change of steel happens in stages, first the steel darkens then turns brown, then dark purple to dark blue to light blue and finally white. To draw out these colours evenly the form was put in a kiln usually used for ceramics and heated to 400° celsius for 30 min. The results were an unexpected bronze-gold colour over most of the piece that gradiates to orange and purple and blue in other areas. This final form is the culmination of everything learned from the first three, it is technically refined and visually stunning. Form. We shared responsibilities equally and were all involved with each step of the process. Silva is a project that emerged from design to a project brief entitled “two legs and a rail” with the objective being to design and made a sitting and working surface. Our team took the approach of designing a bench as a moment of pause before heading out for the day or coming back home after a busy day out. Two heights works well for people of different heights and the compact design fits in any small apartment. If one height is not in use it also works well as a display surface for a bowl of keys or even a vase of flowers. Although the initial intented location was at the entrance, after talking to a few people who live in apartment, we concluded that Silva could fit well in various locations including the living room or the foot of a bed. Simple tabs slotted into each other provide a strong surface, suitable as a seat or a small table. A steel ring made from 1/4” rod, bent and welded into a continuos loop sits around the legs adds extra stability and a nice aesthetic detail. The form is loosely based on a jelly fish (hence the name) with nods to retrofuturism. It is a waist bag intended for everyday use by young adults, perhaps in university, or simply going about their everyday lives. It was made out of dead-stock fabric that was donated by Arc’teryx. The final design has three separate compartments with zipper access, including a safety pocket at the back that sits against the user’s body. The project took pairs of denim that had been donated due to a manufacturing error that rendered them unsellable and turning them into something new. Through hours of meticulous deconstruction I posed a series of what if questions for the jeans: what if they were curtains, what if they were a couch, a carpet, a lamp? What if the jeans could speak to more than simply a pair of pants? Eventually I came to the construction of a traveller’s cloak, a garment constructed out of 4 or 5 deconstructed pairs of jeans that would be both functional and speculative. It would serve as an inquiry into to what happens to perceived “useless” materials. Reworking pieces of denim into a new patchwork that would eventually become a new garment. Pieces were made with the intention of producing as little waste as possible, working with existing lines and curves to make a piece of the pattern. 9-11. The final construction of the cloak, because it is a speculative piece there are raw and finished edges. They were a way for me to work through an unknown by making in a material that I love. Before I started working in steel I worked in jewellery scale and material (silver and copper mostly) but moving into steel allowed me to scale up in the dimension of the work I was making. Paper Scultpure. 2020 “Hello.” is a a scultpure of a stranger turned close friend made out of paper, cardboard, and thread. I met him over zoom in the midst of the pandemic in an online class breakout room. Our first introduction was to make three dimensional portraits of each other out of paper so that breakout room was 10 minutes of asking ice-breaker questions to each other until we had some sense of who the other was. We each chose a word for our subject, I assigned him stealthy. What resulted was this sculpture trying to capture the nuance of a person who I had known of for only a few weeks, and who I had known personally for a few days.
