“Hello.” is a a scultpure of a stranger turned close friend made out of paper, cardboard, and thread. I met him over zoom in the midst of the pandemic in an online class breakout room. Our first introduction was to make three dimensional portraits of each other out of paper so that breakout room was 10 minutes of asking ice-breaker questions to each other until we had some sense of who the other was. We each chose a word for our subject, I assigned him stealthy. What resulted was this sculpture trying to capture the nuance of a person who I had known of for only a few weeks, and who I had known personally for a few days. Of course looking back the sculpture is incomplete, although now that I know him a lot better, I think it stays true to his essence, which is like every human, is complex.
